71 Kirkham Street, Plumstead, London · SE18 2JS · Mo-Sa 12:00-00:00; Su 12:00-23:00

Plumstead Common Working Men's Club is a proper old-school CIU members' club just off the common in SE18, and it has been part of this corner of south-east London for over a century. Behind the red-brick frontage on Kirkham Street you get a fully staffed bar, a couple of function halls, a snooker room and dartboards you can play on. It suits darts players who want a relaxed local rather than a slick city bar, and groups who fancy a cheap pint and a few legs. The single most useful thing to know: this is a members' club, so the bar may only be open to members and signed-in guests, and the darts are free to play rather than a bookable timed oche.

The darts setup

This is club darts, not a modern bookable venue. There is no automatic scoring or hired oche by the hour. You play on the club's boards with a bar nearby and chalk it up the old way. The club is also one of the home venues for the Greater London Darts Organisation (GLDO) Men's Super League, which runs on Monday nights across the capital. The Super League format here is seven players a team playing seven singles legs per night, so on a match Monday you can watch league darts played at a decent standard before you have a throw yourself.

Good to know

It is a CIU-affiliated working men's club, so the bar and games rooms may be for members and signed-in guests rather than open to anyone off the street. Drinks are members' prices, which is the whole point of the place, and there is a real ale on (Bombardier) alongside the usual lager and bitter. The club only lets you drink what you buy at the bar, so do not turn up with your own. Beyond darts there is a snooker room with several tables, big-screen sports TVs and live music nights. Buffet food can be laid on if you ask in advance for a do.

Getting there

The club sits on Kirkham Street, a quiet residential turn near Plumstead Common in SE18. Plumstead railway station is the closest stop, a walk away on the Southeastern line out of London Bridge and Cannon Street, and plenty of buses run along Plumstead Common Road and Plumstead High Street nearby. It is the south-east London side of the river rather than central, so the train is your easiest route in. The bar runs late, until midnight most nights and 11pm on Sundays, so there is no rush once you are settled.
