Clash of the Titans
Riverside Studios
Before blockbuster mythological epics became a formula, there was Clash of the Titans, and Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion creatures stealing every frame. Decades before modern CGI, a marine monster, a snake-haired gorgon, and winged horse were built by hand and shot frame by frame. Watching that work on a big screen now feels like a masterclass in practical effects.
The 1981 film is built around Harry Hamlin as Perseus, taking on impossible tasks to save Andromeda from divine wrath. Olivier and Smith bring weight to the gods orchestrating mortal fates from above. It's pure spectacle, but with real craft underneath. Riverside's screening runs 18-20 July as part of a broader Myths and Monsters season, and if you're catching more than one film, there's 15% off multi-buy tickets.
