Matthew Bourne remakes Carmen as a 1950s garage-diner thriller. The Spanish cigarette factory becomes a Midwest diner where a stranger arrives and destroys everything. Betrayal, desire, greed, lust, revenge. It's told through dance, not singing. Bourne's one of those choreographers who makes the story work entirely through movement, and the score stays with you.
You don't need to know Carmen or love dance. The emotional logic is clear: a closed world, a beautiful disruption, everything falling apart. That's the draw.
Go if you want theatre that means something. It's demanding, but it connects.
