Night shift. A 999 call. Russell Tovey's on the other end, playing the officer. A woman's in danger on the line. He's got her fragmented words and nothing else, has to decode what's actually happening in real time, and you're watching it unfold. Real-time theatre is always a risk: one wrong move and it falls apart. But this adaptation of Den Skyldige and The Guilty, directed by Felix Barrett and written by Chloe Moss, builds pressure carefully.
The Donmar's intimate space amplifies everything. You're locked in a room with Tovey's character while the ground shifts beneath you. The script doesn't let you breathe. If you like thrillers built on uncertainty where the tension feels physical, this works.
