The Importance of Being Oscar
Park Theatre
If you know Wilde's plays but haven't thought much about his life, this is a smart way in. Alastair Whatley carries the role as Wilde himself, and what you get is neither straight hero-worship nor a tragedy tour. Michael Fentiman's direction keeps things moving; the script draws on Wilde's own words and Micheal Mac Liammoir's writing, so it has real depth beyond the broad strokes.
There are genuine laughs here, but also the kind of quiet moments that make the whole thing land harder. Theatre that makes you reconsider someone you thought you knew.
It's passing through London as part of a wider tour, so this is the chance to see it before the full run.
