The National Theatre is a place for plays first. You'll find a mix of old and new: classic writing, modern work, and productions that stay with you on the way home. Some are big, stage-heavy shows. Others are small, sharp and close to the bone. It draws a wide crowd. Regulars who follow the repertoire, families who come for the spectacle, and students who want to see how a text gets staged. You don't need to know the play beforehand. You will get more from it if you read a little first. Start with the writer or the director when you're choosing. The best nights here tend to come from productions that take a risk with form.
