East Street Market
East Street Market is one of London's oldest, largest and busiest street markets, running the length of East Street just off Walworth Road in Southwark. Street trading has happened here since the 16th century, and the market was officially established in 1880. Known to locals simply as 'The Lane', it is a sprawling, no-frills market that reflects the area's deep cultural diversity. On a Saturday more than 250 stalls line the street, selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to clothing, household goods and African fabrics, all wrapped in the noise and bustle that has made it a Walworth institution for generations.
Opening times
East Street Market is open Tuesday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, Saturday from 8am to 6:30pm, and Sunday from 8am to 2pm. It is closed on Mondays. Saturday is the biggest and busiest day, when over 250 stalls trade and the weekly plant and flower market runs, so come early in the morning for the best produce and a quieter browse.
What's on the stalls
You will find a huge mix of inexpensive new and second-hand goods spread along the street. Stalls sell fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, clothing in all sizes, shoes, bags, hats, jewellery, cosmetics, perfume, household products and confectionery. The produce reflects Southwark's diversity, ranging from everyday staples to cassava, durian and African clothing and materials, plus a popular plant market each Saturday.
