Backyard is an arts space in Hackney where stand-up comedy has become the main draw. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights form the backbone, and they run a New Act Night and The Comedy Hump, which tells you they're as interested in developing comedians as in established names. You get newer material, acts still finding their voice, the kind of place you might catch someone before they're anywhere else on the circuit. It's proper Hackney independent venue culture: low-pretence, run by people who actually care about the thing rather than how it plays.
