The darts setup

This is a free pub board, not a bookable bar with automatic scoring. You grab the oche when it is free, chalk up yourself, and play. No timed sessions, no deposit, no app. The board sits in the main room, so a game runs alongside the regular pub crowd rather than in a sealed-off booth. The Five Bells also has pool and snooker, so if the darts is busy there is something else to play while you wait. Bring your own arrows if you are fussy, though a house set is the norm here. It is casual throwing, the kind you fit around a pint.

Good to know

No need to book, just walk in. The pub is split-level and fairly narrow, with seating at the front and rear, wood panelling and a real fire, so it can feel snug when it fills up. The kitchen makes Brazilian dishes, burgers and pizzas fresh on-site, for eat in or takeaway, so you can line your stomach without leaving. Greene King IPA is the house cask ale. Four big screens carry football, boxing, rugby and golf on Sky and TNT, which means match days get loud. Children are welcome until 7pm.

Getting there

The Five Bells sits at the top (northern) end of Streatham High Road, near the Streatham Hill and Balham border, at numbers 68 to 70. Streatham Hill rail station is the closest overground stop, with Streatham station a little further south down the same road. Plenty of buses run the length of the High Road, so it is an easy hop from Brixton, Balham or Clapham. Picnic benches sit out front on the pavement if you want to catch some air between legs. It is a proper local rather than a destination, so expect regulars and a relaxed weeknight feel.
