Outdoor Cinema: Pierrot le Fou
Barbican Centre
This Godard film works as pure cinema pleasure if you stop expecting plot to sit still. A couple on the run, painted backdrops, bright colours, everything in motion. It's the kind of thing the Barbican picks for outdoor screenings because it doesn't need a quiet room to work; it needs air and light and strangers watching. French film from the sixties, but not the kind that requires you to suffer for taste.
Godard made something here that's all surface and energy, but surfaces matter. Nothing sits still. If cinema that plays with how it's made as much as what it's about appeals to you, this is worth the evening. If you've written off French New Wave as pretentious, this one's direct enough to change your mind.
