Rex Orange County built something rare: a career that went from bedroom self-release to nine billion streams without sounding engineered. That's partly because it wasn't. From his debut at 16 through to his latest album with James Blake producing, he's moved at his own pace, picking collaborators (Tyler, Ravyn Lenae) who seemed to genuinely want to work with him.
Village Underground suits this. It's intimate enough that you're hearing how those songs sit together live, not just watching an achievement tick past. The newer material especially needs that.
He's the kind of artist who holds a room because the songs are intricate and he cares about playing them right. That matters when you're not filling a stadium.
