394 Lee High Road, Lee, London · SE12 8RW · Mo-Sa 11:00-23:00; Su 12:00-22:30

The Duke of Edinburgh is a friendly Victorian corner pub on Lee High Road, on the main road between Lewisham and Lee. It is the only riverside pub in the borough of Lewisham, sat right beside the little River Quaggy, and the exterior has barely changed since it went up in the 1870s. Inside is one main room built around a front bar. For darts, this is a proper league local: it fields a side in the Hither Green Darts League and has hosted league knockouts like the Memorial Cup. The board is free to play, no booking and no fee, so you can just turn up, get a pint of Greene King IPA in, and have a few legs. Tuesday is quiz night at 8:15pm and there is regular live music too.

The darts setup

This is a traditional pub board rather than a banks-of-oches darts bar. There is a dartboard in the main room and the pub runs a team in the Hither Green Darts League, the long-running South East London league that links pubs and clubs from Sydenham and Catford out to Eltham and Lewisham. League nights follow the usual format of threes, doubles-start pairs, singles and a team game, so on a fixture night the board is in use and the place gets competitive. Outside of matches you can play casually with friends. There is no automatic scoring or fancy kit here, just chalk, a board and the regulars.

Good to know

Playing darts is free and you do not book, you just walk in and use the board when it is open. The pub keeps standard hours: Monday to Saturday 11:00 to 23:00 and Sunday 12:00 to 22:30. Greene King IPA is the regular cask ale. Tuesday is quiz night from 8:15pm, and the pub puts on live music fairly regularly, so check what is on if you want a quiet game. It is a single-room corner local, so it can fill up on busy nights, including when the darts team has a home fixture.

Getting there

The pub sits at 394 Lee High Road, postcode SE12 8RW, on the Lewisham-to-Lee road right next to the River Quaggy. The nearest station is Lee, about a ten minute walk away, with Lewisham (DLR, National Rail and trams) also within reach. Plenty of buses stop close by, including the 122, 178, 202, 261 and 321. If you are coming for a darts night, it is an easy hop from Lewisham or Catford, which is handy given the Hither Green Darts League it plays in covers exactly that patch of South East London.
