The Duke of Edinburgh (Lee): Darts in London
The Duke of Edinburgh is a friendly Victorian corner pub on Lee High Road, the only riverside pub in the borough of Lewisham, sitting right beside the little River Quaggy. It has a dartboard and plays host to the Hither Green Darts League, so this is a proper pub board with regulars who know their checkouts, not a polished bookable setup. If you want a cheap throw with a pint in a place that has barely changed since the 1870s, this is your spot.
It is free to play, walk-in only, and easy to reach off the main road between Lewisham and Lee. Real ale is usually on, there is sport on the TV, and Tuesday is quiz night from 8:15pm. Come for the darts, stay for a slow one by the bar.
The darts setup
There is a dartboard here and it earns its keep. The Duke is a listed venue in the Hither Green Darts League, the South East London league that runs pub and club teams from Sydenham across to Eltham, so league nights bring teams in to play their fixtures on the house board. The rest of the week it is a standard pub board, free to use when it is quiet. Expect a single oche in a single-room pub built around the front bar, not a multi-board venue. Bring your own arrows if you have a set, or borrow the house ones and chalk up the old-fashioned way.
Good to know
No booking and no charge. You just walk in, and the board is there to use when a team is not on it. The pub keeps long hours, 11:00 to 23:00 Monday to Saturday and noon to 22:30 on Sunday, so you can get a throw in early or late. Real ale is usually available with Greene King IPA as the regular, and there is sport showing on the TV. Tuesday is quiz night from 8:15pm if you fancy testing more than your aim. There is a garden and a real fire, plus occasional live music.
Getting there
The Duke sits on Lee High Road, the main road between Lewisham and Lee, beside the River Quaggy. Your nearest station is Lee, about a 10 minute walk away, and Lewisham is a short hop in the other direction for DLR and rail connections. Plenty of buses stop close by, including the 122, 178, 321, 202 and 261, so getting here without a car is straightforward. It is a corner pub, so it is easy to spot from the road once you are on Lee High Road heading out towards Lee Green.
