Tate Modern in Bankside is the kind of place where what you get out of it depends on what you bring. It's big, it shows everything from old paintings to new video and sculpture, and the programming mixes major retrospectives with commissions and deep dives into specific subjects. You'll find students, collectors, people who come for one artist and stay for three hours. You're not here for the quickie visit. The crowd assumes you're serious about looking, and the work on the walls usually justifies that. Photography sits alongside painting, contemporary alongside historical.
