About Amstel Hotel
The Amstel Hotel is a five-star hotel on the east bank of the river Amstel at Professor Tulpplein in Amsterdam, and it has been taking guests since 1867. You do not need a room to go in: the lounge, restaurant and bar welcome visitors, and the building itself, with its white and gold lobby ceiling and eight lions on the roof, is a good part of the reason to come.
The physician and city planner Samuel Sarphati pushed for the hotel, but he died in 1866 before it opened. Cornelis Outshoorn was the architect, and financial trouble meant only the wing along the river was built. The hotel opened on 27 April 1867. Later restorations reopened it in 1992, brought back the original colours and the lost lions in 2017 and 2018, and renewed the lobby ceiling in 2020. Katara Hospitality owns the building, and InterContinental Hotels Group runs it.
The Dining Room, under chef de cuisine Wouter Wingelaar, looks out over the river and works with the seasons. The Amstel Lounge sits beneath a dome and serves afternoon tea from Friday to Sunday, which needs booking well ahead. In autumn and winter the bar turns into a Spritz Room with Bols, where you just walk in. Weesperplein metro station is a few metres away, and pets are not allowed anywhere in the hotel.
The hours on this page are those of The Dining Room, where booking is recommended. The Amstel Lounge serves coffee, wine and bites from Monday to Thursday, 08:00 to 17:00, and afternoon tea on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 12:30 to 14:30 and from 16:00 to 18:00. From Centraal, take the metro to Weesperplein, or tram 4 to Frederiksplein and walk along the Sarphatistraat over the bridge.
