About Factor IJ
Factor IJ is the art centre of IJburg, on the Pampuslaan in Amsterdam, with an art lending library, gallery, design shop and art cafe under one roof. You go to borrow a painting for your wall, see work by young Amsterdam artists, or work for a few hours among the art with a coffee.
The lending library holds more than 2,000 works, mainly by Amsterdam artists. Members choose from the online catalogue or come in for advice, and can swap a work when they want something new. Artworks can also be bought. In the gallery, the Spotlight programme gives a starting artist a fortnight-long show, one after another, and there are bigger exhibitions, film screenings, readings, open mic nights and concerts. Children get art classes run by ART LAB Amsterdam, and the design shop has work from Susan Bijl and local makers.
The organisation has moved around. It started in 1984 as Artotheek Oost in the Elisabeth Otter Knollhuis, and in 2009 moved to the Zuiveringshal on the Oranje Vrijstaatkade under the name CBK Amsterdam, where exhibitions included one in which refuse collectors picked their favourite art. After the district told it to leave in 2019, a pop-up as CoolCBK in a former Cool Cat store kept the lending going. In 2021 it opened as Factor IJ on IJburg, now an independent foundation.
Factor IJ is at Pampuslaan 11 and is open Wednesday to Friday from 08:30 to 18:00 and on Saturday from 11:00 to 17:00. You can work here during those hours, with free Wi-Fi and coffee from the coffee corner. The 50 square metre workshop room takes up to 20 people, and the whole space can be hired for meetings, presentations and dinners.
