Nieuw en Meer: Community centre in Oeverlanden, Amsterdam
Nieuw en Meer is an artists' community on a former ammunition depot on the Oude Haagseweg, at the edge of Amsterdam Nieuw-West by the Amsterdamse Bos. You go for exhibitions and events, a meal in the cantina, or to see how a group of artists has run its own site since the late 1980s. The 3.7-hectare site has about 100 studios in around 9,000 square metres of buildings, in green surroundings along the Groene As. The first buildings date from 1918, when the depot belonged to the Defence Line of Amsterdam. Artists from the Conradstraat 11 squatted it on 25 June 1988, the day of Marco van Basten's goal in the European Championship final. Stichting Nieuw en Meer followed in August that year, and the site was legalised in 1991. It runs independently, without subsidy. Project space Kate and the gallery Cleerdin & Hamer Exhibitions show work on site, and cantina De Zeemeermin Zonder Hoofd is the place to eat and meet. Buses 397 and 69 stop nearby, at Anderlechtlaan and Oude Haagseweg. Look at the agenda for what is on before you go.
