Plantage Dok: Community centre in Amsterdam
Plantage Dok is a collectively run building in the Plantage neighbourhood of Amsterdam, part art community, part people's kitchen, part venue. It sits on the Plantage Doklaan by the Entrepotdok, and the reason to go is the weekly Dok-avond, when residents serve vegan food alongside art and music. The building has been a church, a printing business and a school. Ten people squatted it in 1998, and in 2000 the group bought and renovated it with government help. Today some 30 people work here on equal terms, including architects, visual artists, actors, musicians, designers and political activists. The public side is the Dokzaal, a bright hall built as a church hall in 1872 and restored in 2010, and the Dokhuis Galerie, a cafe and exhibition space. Concerts, films, benefit dinners and theatre take place here, organised by the residents and by outside groups. Parking is very limited, so come by bike.
