About Theater De Krakeling

Theater De Krakeling is Amsterdam's theatre for children and young people, on the Westergas site at Pazzanistraat 15, next to the Westerpark. Everything here is made for a young audience, with shows that use music, dance, mime, puppets, multimedia and visual art, and age indications from toddlers to teenagers.

Performances run weekly in the theatre's own hall, from new talent and established makers, and each listing gives a minimum age. Schools come for performances made for them. For visitors who do not speak Dutch there is an LNP programme, short for language no problem. Accessibility gets real attention here too: some shows have a sign language interpreter, some a live audio describer, and some a relaxed reception with a smaller audience and a quiet room. The theatre is on the ground floor of a car-free site and easy to reach by wheelchair.

De Krakeling was founded in 1978 thanks to Hans Snoek, and for decades it was housed in the Turnhallen at Nieuwe Passeerdersstraat 1, by the Koekjesbrug. Many Amsterdammers remember going there as children. That old building no longer met safety requirements, and on 1 July 2020 the theatre moved to the former gasworks site, where the auditorium carries her name: the Hans Snoek Zaal. It also presents the Jeugdtheatergala and the Zilveren Krekel award, and programmes shows in Noord and Zuid.

The box office opens by appointment and from an hour and a half before a performance, and can be phoned on 020 624 5123 from Wednesday to Friday, 14:00 to 17:00. You can buy tickets at the box office until just before the start, by card. Reservations open a month ahead, with a maximum of ten tickets per show. With a Stadspas you pay €1.50 for a child and an accompanying adult, once a month. Rooms for hire hold 10 to 220 people, or up to 370 for the whole theatre.
