Tobacco Theater: Theatre in Burgwallen, Amsterdam

TOBACCO Theater is a privately run theatre and event venue in a former tobacco auction house on the Nes, the theatre street in the centre of Amsterdam. You will go for a performance or cultural evening from its agenda, or for a company event, as business hire is what pays for the programme. The theatre takes no subsidy, and it says so with some pride: income from conferences, product launches, company parties, meetings and dinners funds the cultural side. That programme leaves room for unusual and independent initiatives, and its foundation Stel je Voor supports young talent. The building has nine rooms, each with its own styling. The theatre hall holds up to 400 people, and the smaller rooms from about 20 to 100. Usually an event has the building to itself, although single rooms can sometimes be hired. Art is part of the interior, with work by names such as Herman Brood and Erwin Olaf on the walls, and the poster case on the facade shows pieces by guest artists. Metro 52 stops at Rokin, one minute's walk away, and trams 4 and 14 stop there too. Visitors with limited mobility have their own entrance, a lift reaches every room except the balcony, and there is an accessible toilet on the ground floor. Let the venue know by email beforehand.
