Veronica Schip: Event venue in NDSM, Amsterdam
Het Veronica Schip is the former broadcasting ship of pirate station Radio Veronica, now an event venue, club and group dining spot moored at NDSM-Pier 1 in Amsterdam Noord. You board for a club night in the hold, or for a dinner, party or wedding that you book yourself. The ship has four spaces, which you can hire alone or together for 20 to 700 guests. The Bovendek runs to the rail with views over the water and the NDSM cranes and fits a dinner for 100. The Tussendek, with a glass roof and a bar, takes 150 standing. De Buik, the hold below the waterline, is the club, with its own light and sound system and a DJ booth. The floating terrace alongside has glass windscreens and fire baskets. Chef Tanercan cooks Mediterranean mezze, tapas and charcoal-grilled dishes for groups from 20, seven days a week by reservation. Club nights and showcases are run by outside organisers, and tickets go through them. The ship started life in 1949 in Hamburg as a trawler and was fishing off Iceland in the 1950s, later as the Norderney. Radio Veronica bought it in 1964 and broadcast from it off the Dutch coast until 31 August 1974, surviving a storm in April 1973 that drove it onto the beach at Scheveningen. It has been at the NDSM site since November 2013, and the club and restaurant date from May 2018. The free ferry from Amsterdam Centraal takes about 15 minutes.
