Salon De IJzerstaven: Music venue in Bickerseiland, Amsterdam
Salon de IJzerstaven is a tiny concert stage on the Bickerseiland in Amsterdam, in the working studio of visual artist Egon Schrama at Bickersgracht 10. Go for modern classical music and improvised jazz at close range, with room for at most 50 people and a leaning towards the experimental. The building, De IJzerstaven, is a municipal industrial monument from 1904 that once housed a trading firm in steel profiles, and Schrama has had his studio here for 40 years. Musicians such as Han Bennink, Eric Vloeimans, Guus Janssen and Wiek Hijmans have played the room, and Willem Breuker's former grand piano gets regular use. There are about 20 performances a year, announced through a mailing list, and audience and players usually stay to talk afterwards. A team of around 15 volunteers, mostly from the neighbourhood, handles publicity, sound and light and films the concerts for an online archive. Young conservatoire graduates also use the stage for try-outs.
