About Volkshotel
Volkshotel is a hotel on the Wibautstraat in Amsterdam-Oost, in the former head office of the newspaper de Volkskrant, and you don't need a room to use it. People come for Canvas, the restaurant and bar on the seventh floor, for the cafe and co-working space on the ground floor, and for the club nights at Doka.
Canvas serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks every day, with a walk-in terrace and views over the city. On Canvas Nights DJs take over the bar, with residents on Tuesdays and Thursdays and guests at the weekend. Downstairs, Werkplaats has a free jazz session in the lobby every Thursday and a Friday hangout called Station Werkplaats. On the eighth floor, Badplaats has rooftop hot tubs and a barrel sauna: hotel guests can use them daily, and the spa opens to everyone on Sundays.
The building opened in 1965 as the Volkskrant's headquarters. The editors left in 2007 and Canvas moved into the old canteen that November. The creative tenants who took over helped save the building from demolition, and it opened as a hotel in June 2014. Broedplaats VKG, run by Stichting Urban Resort, still has its studios at the back, and some of its makers offer workshops. Payment throughout is by card only.
The hours on this page are those of the café in Werkplaats on the ground floor, where the free flex desks are open every day from 07:30 to midnight. Canvas is open every day for lunch, dinner and drinks, but terrace tables cannot be booked. Doka has limited space and its times vary per event. On Sundays Badplaats is open to everyone from 12:00 to 18:00, and swimwear is required. There is a paid car park beside the building.
