About Kompaszaal
De Kompaszaal is a 1950s ballroom in the former passenger terminal of the KNSM shipping line on KNSM-eiland, Amsterdam Oost. You go to dance swing, rock 'n' roll, salsa or tango, or to have a drink on the terrace overlooking the IJ.
The terminal opened in 1956, 100 years after the company was founded, and was the first luxury ship terminal in the Netherlands. Ship architect Johan van Tienhoven designed the interior, working with post-war artists, and travellers once waited here before sailing. It sits in the building known as Loods 6.
The 500 square metre ballroom, a 180 square metre lobby and two 25 square metre studios are all for hire. Swing Philosophy, Gel Rock 'n Roll, which dates from 1984, and Salsa District all teach or dance here, and there are Argentine tango salons too. The grand café serves drinks, soup and toasties, and may close when there is a private booking. Bus 43 or 65 runs to Azartplein, and the F1 ferry comes across from the Zamenhofstraat.
