About Ramses Shaffy Huis
The Ramses Shaffy Huis is a house for older and younger artists at Piet Heinkade 231 in Amsterdam's Eastern Docklands, and its ground-floor Sociëteit is a small stage open to visitors. Go for the Shaffy Muziekcafé, an art lecture or an exhibition opening, in a room built around a Bechstein grand piano.
Named after the singer and actor Ramses Shaffy, it is the first artists' house in Amsterdam where young and old live and work together. The 36 flats above the Sociëteit have been fully occupied since June 2016: 24 for older artists and 12 for recent art school graduates. His motto on the facade tells you the mood: sing, fight, cry, pray, laugh, work and admire.
The public agenda mixes jazz and klezmer afternoons, culture lectures, live radio plays and choir rehearsals, with tickets paid per event. The Sociëteit is otherwise a members' room for residents and friends of the house. Everything in the building is wheelchair accessible. The entrance is on the side, on the Klapmutsenveem.
