About Pakhuis de Zwijger

Pakhuis de Zwijger is a former cold store on the Piet Heinkade in Amsterdam's Eastern Docklands, now a public meeting place for talks, debates and cultural evenings about the city and how we live in it. Go for a programme on housing, technology, the economy or climate, with the people working on those questions in the room.

It opened in this form in 2006 as a platform for creation and social innovation, and it calls itself a 'praathuis', a house for talking. Artists and designers share the stage with scientists, policymakers and residents, and programmes are made with a large group of partners. Rooms include the Grote Zaal, the Studio black box and the IJzaal, with views over the river.

The warehouse went up in 1933-34 for perishable goods, in the Nieuwe Bouwen style, then stood empty and faced demolition. The Jan Schaeferbrug, opened in 2001, was built right through it instead, and the building became a national monument that year. The in-house restaurant closed in late October 2026 while the organisation rethinks its catering, but the bar still serves drinks around programmes.
