About De Hallen Amsterdam

De Hallen is a former tram depot behind the Kinkerstraat in Amsterdam Oud-West, turned into a covered cultural complex with a cinema, food hall, library, hotel, studios and shops. Come for a film at Filmhallen, street food at Foodhallen, or a weekend market in De Passage, the long public hall that ties it all together.

De Hallen is not one organisation but a building full of independent ones. De Passage hosts markets on most weekends, plus banner exhibitions and open activities. Filmhallen has nine screens and the Parisien room with the original interior of Cinema Parisien from 1924. There is the OBA library with Belcampo, the local stage Hal West, Kanarie Club, Hotel De Hallen, the Beeldend Gesproken gallery, and makers such as Denim City, Recycle and Kinki Academy.

The city built the depot in stages between 1901 and 1928, on the filled-in Kwakerspoel, and trams were serviced here until 1996. It stood empty after 2005 and was squatted on 31 January 2010 by activists and artists who distrusted the redevelopment plans. Architect André van Stigt and the TROM foundation then led the renovation, and De Hallen officially opened on 5 February 2015. The Passage hours listed here are for the public hall; each business keeps its own.

The Passage is open seven days a week and free to walk through. Trams 7 and 17 stop at Bilderdijkstraat and Ten Katestraat, both within walking distance. The bike storage holds about 1,300 bikes, with entrances at the car park on the Bellamyplein and at the OBA library, and bikes are not allowed in the Passage. The municipal car park under the building is entered from the Bellamyplein, takes card payments and has a lift and a disabled parking space.
