Meneer de Wit: Community centre in De Baarsjes, Amsterdam
Meneer de Wit is a cultural workspace complex on the corner of the Baarsjesweg and Postjesweg in De Baarsjes, Amsterdam-West. Musicians, artists, theatre groups, craftspeople and dance and music schools work there side by side, and you go for a dance class, a comedy night, a concert or a meal. It grew out of the former broedplaats Het Voorbeeld, a community of makers based in what is now Het Sieraad on the Postjesweg. Since 2005 it has developed independently, and today it runs about 2,000 square metres across ten addresses and twenty studios, spread around the junction with the Witte de Withstraat. It grew up as the neighbourhood changed around it, from a deprived area to a sought-after one. The public side is the part most visitors see. There are salsa and bachata lessons, courses, a comedy night and live music, and the studios are also for hire. The residency Lab|MdW gives young artists a large studio for three months without rent, with a public presentation at the end. On the food side, Berli serves Indonesian dishes as smaller plates to share, and Bo's Deli is the espresso bar.
