4.3

De VerbroederIJ is a city beach with a pavilion, vegetable garden and community space on the IJ in Amsterdam-Noord, right by the ferry to Oost. Go for lunch or dinner with your feet near the water, or for one of the many free activities: yoga, repair sessions, live music and neighbourhood dinners. Local residents dreamed it up and built it, and the motto is Samen voor Elkaar, together for each other. Volunteers, people returning to work, interns and people in day care all help in the cafe-restaurant and the grounds. The week is full: sports classes, meditation and a Socratic discussion group, with a monthly communal meal, a free BurenBingo and a monthly performance by the water. There is a Kunstclub for children, and residents with an idea of their own get a room and help with funding. Behind the pavilion lies the MoestuinderIJ, where vegetables are grown for the volunteers and flowers for the bees. De ZagerIJ takes on woodworking jobs, and two pigs provide manure for the garden. Visitors can pay it forward with a coffee or a meal for someone short of money. The cafe has a limited number of bookable tables, and the terrace is walk-in. The ground was always meant to be temporary, as it is set aside for urban development. The cafe is open from Tuesday to Sunday and on Mondays by request. You will find it on the IJ, next to the ferry to Oost and eight minutes' walk from metro station Noorderpark. Parking is free from 19:00.
