GROND: Event venue in Bajeskwartier, Amsterdam
GROND is an art space and collective in the Nieuwe Bajesdorp building at Bijdorpstraat 1, in the Bajeskwartier in Amsterdam Oost. Artists from different disciplines run it together, and you go for performances, symposia, film nights, workshops and exhibitions in a black box theatre, two studios and a canteen. The black box measures 56 square metres and takes 30 people seated or 50 standing, with a dance floor and professional sound and video equipment. Studio 1 is a bright room with large windows, Studio 2 is a workshop space with a mezzanine, and the canteen and kitchen seat 25. The big garden next door, kept by volunteers, can be used as well. Everything is for hire for meetings, rehearsals, workshops, parties and concerts, though not for regularly recurring classes. The collective has about a dozen members, among them composers, dancers, theatre makers, film makers and visual artists, plus an artist and chef who cooks Sudanese food. Its stated aim is to fight alienation through collective work. A crowdfunding campaign in 2024 raised just over 15,000 euros. We found no fixed opening hours: GROND opens for what is on its calendar, so check that before you travel. The nearest metro stations are Spaklerweg and Overamstel.
