Meervaart is a theatre and congress centre on the Sloterplas in Osdorp, and it has been the cultural centre of Amsterdam Nieuw-West since 1977. You go for theatre, dance, comedy and music without crossing the city, in a house that tries to bring the neighbourhood and the wider city into one foyer. The two main halls are the Rode Zaal, a large theatre with 800 seats, and the Blauwe Zaal with 260 seats and a view over the Sloterplas. There are twelve rooms in all, so the same building also takes national and international congresses and meetings. Meervaart Jong is for children and teenagers from 2 to 16, and Meervaart Studio works on talent development for ages 15 to 26. At most performances an interval drink is included, and your ticket will say so. Meervaart generally does not offer dinner before a show. All public areas can be reached by lift, the halls have wheelchair places you book in advance, and both main halls have a hearing support system. Cars can use the MIX and Q-Park garages near the Osdorpplein. The city and Meervaart are working towards a new building, De Nieuwe Meervaart, on the south-west shore of the lake. There is a cloakroom for coats, bags, prams and buggies. To book a wheelchair place, call 020 410 7777 on a weekday between 12:00 and 17:00: the Rode Zaal has room for four wheelchairs and the Blauwe Zaal for one. The hearing support uses Phonak Roger receivers with headphones, which you can borrow from reception. A disabled parking bay is right outside, and parking in the surrounding streets is free on Sundays.
