About OBA Oosterdok
OBA Oosterdok is the central branch of the Amsterdam public library, in a ten-floor building on the Oosterdokseiland, a short walk from Centraal. You go to read, work or just sit with a view of the city: entry is free and you do not need a membership to walk in.
Architect Jo Coenen designed the building, which opened on 7 July 2007 with 28,500 square metres of floor space. It has around 1,200 seats, many of them with computers, and the collection stretches over books, magazines, music, films and games. Materials can be consulted free of charge; you only need a membership to take them home or use the computers. It also houses IHLIA, the LGBTI heritage collection, and the Maakplaats workshop.
The high point is the seventh floor, which has a restaurant with a terrace and views across the city. A theatre with about 250 seats is on the same floor. There is also a café on the ground floor and free Wi-Fi for your own device. The library is the main branch of a network of about 26, which traces back to the first public library in the city, opened on the Keizersgracht in 1919.
