About Paradiso

Paradiso is the concert hall and club in a 19th-century church building on the Weteringschans, a short walk from the Leidseplein in Amsterdam. People have called it the poptempel for decades, and it is where you go to see a band under stained glass, or to stay on for a club night in the same room.

The Grote Zaal holds 1,500, the Bovenzaal upstairs 210, and the cellar cafe is the place for a drink before or after a show. The programme runs from concerts to club nights and talks, and Paradiso also books shows at other Amsterdam venues, including Bitterzoet, Cinetol, De Duif and the Vondelkerk. Showtimes differ per night and are listed on each programme page.

The building dates from 1880 and was made for the free-thinking religious group De Vrije Gemeente. Hippies squatted it in 1967, and on 30 March 1968 it opened as the Cosmisch Ontspanningscentrum Paradiso. Pink Floyd played within two months. The Sex Pistols, Prince, Nirvana and David Bowie followed, and the Rolling Stones recorded part of their Stripped album here in 1995.

Common questions

How many people fit in Paradiso?
The Grote Zaal has a capacity of 1,500 and the Bovenzaal upstairs takes 210. A cellar cafe sits below them, and on a busy night separate programmes can run in different rooms.
Do you need a membership for Paradiso?
Many programmes require a Paradiso membership on top of your ticket, and your ticket or the programme page shows whether yours does. A monthly membership stays valid for 30 days from the first scan, and regular visitors can take a yearly one.
Can you pay with cash at Paradiso?
No, all the bars are cashless, so bring a debit or credit card. Lockers are rented on the spot with a QR code and your phone.
Is Paradiso wheelchair accessible?
Yes, through the side entrance on the left of the building, which has a ramp. Paradiso asks you to email in advance. The lift reaches the balcony, the Bovenzaal and the accessible toilet in the basement.
Why does Paradiso look like a church?
It was built in 1880 as the meeting hall of De Vrije Gemeente, a religious congregation that left in 1965. The building was squatted in 1967 and opened as a music venue in 1968, which is how it got the name poptempel.
