Good to know

What you can climb

The hall is more than 16 metres high, with 44 ropes and over 216 routes. There are beginner routes, a sloping wall for footwork, vertical walls for endurance, overhangs and a large lead wall. You can also climb on a glass wall that looks out over the city, and on warm days the roof slides open.

The bouldering room has walls up to 4.5 metres, with thick mats and no ropes. Boulders are graded from 1 to 10, and each one uses holds of the same colour.

How it works

To climb alone with a rope you need a climbing status. Without one, book an introductory lesson of one hour, which you do with at least two people, because you learn to belay each other. The lesson does not give you a status, so after that you can do it again or take the basic course of three or four lessons, which ends in the K2 certificate. The course costs €125 for adults and includes entry, teaching and equipment.

Bouldering is suitable from age 6, and under-18s must be actively supervised by an adult. Groups of more than six have to book.

Prices

A day ticket costs €18.70, or €17.70 with a member card, which costs €5 to register for. For ages 10 to 17 it is €15.50 or €14.50. Students pay €11.25 during off-peak hours, which run until 17:00 on weekdays and from 17:00 at weekends. A 10-entry card costs €159, or €99 off-peak.

The introductory lesson is €29.50 for adults and €24 for young people. You can hire shoes for €4.50, a harness with belay gear for €4.50 and a chalk bag for €3.

Facilities and extras

The hall has its own climbing shop. There is currently no café, so you cannot buy food, drinks, snacks, coffee or tea on site. Every Monday from 19:00 to 20:00 a physiotherapist who specialises in climbing injuries holds a free walk-in session.

Getting there and who runs it

The hall is on the Dijksgracht by the IJ, walking distance from Amsterdam Centraal. It is one of the oldest branches of De Klimmuur, which also has halls in The Hague, Haarlem and Rotterdam and belongs to the same family as the Beest Boulders gyms.
