Tate Britain is the one locals treat as a secret even though it has no reason to be. The permanent collection covers British art from 1500 to now, and the temporary exhibitions tend to be less crowded than what's happening across the river at Tate Modern. The walk from Victoria station along Millbank takes about fifteen minutes and is worth doing in daylight.
If you are staying in Victoria or connecting through it, the practical geography matters. Pimlico is a short walk south and has a neighbourhood feel that the area around the station lacks. Belgravia is five minutes north and carries a different kind of quiet. Neither is the centre of London's event scene, but both are easy to reach from almost anywhere on the tube, which makes Victoria a good base for heading to events across the city.
