Weekends shift toward families and tourists in the day, then a slower, more deliberate crowd in the evening heading to a show or a late talk. If you want quiet, aim for a weekday lunchtime around Somerset House.

Getting around is easy, which is part of the appeal. Temple and Embankment stations sit at either end, Covent Garden is a short walk north, and the river path gives you a way to cool off between stops.
