London has more live comedy happening on any given week than most cities manage in a month. The trick is knowing which rooms suit what you are after. A 500-seat theatre show and a 40-person pub basement are both called comedy nights, but they are very different evenings.
Soho carries the most weight, with several dedicated clubs running multiple shows a night. Camden and Bethnal Green have strong pub-room scenes where newer acts work out material in front of tight crowds. If you want to see someone before they get famous, those are the rooms to watch. If you want a reliable headliner with a proper bar, the Soho venues deliver that consistently.
Most club nights run a compere plus two or three acts, sometimes more on a mixed bill. Expect an hour to ninety minutes. Work-in-progress shows tend to be looser and cheaper, and comics often say more interesting things in them. Previews in August before the Edinburgh Fringe are particularly good value: polished material, lower prices, comics genuinely testing what lands.
Timing matters. Tuesday through Thursday tends to be newer acts and cheaper tickets. Friday and Saturday pull bigger names and fuller rooms. If you are going with a group, book ahead for weekend shows. Midweek you can often walk in or book the day of.
