Halal Restaurants in London: 223 events this week (14 Sept to 16 Sept)

London does halal well because so many of its best food cultures cook halal by default. Turkish grills in Green Lanes, Lebanese spots on Edgware Road, Pakistani and Bangladeshi kitchens in Whitechapel and Tooting, Somali cafes in Woolwich. You are not choosing between halal and good. Most of the time they are the same plate.

Edgware Road is the obvious start if you want mixed grills, shisha terraces and late kitchens that keep going well past most of the city has closed up. Green Lanes in Harringay and Haringey does the same job for Turkish and Kurdish cooking, ocakbasi grills with open coals and bread that comes out still puffed. Neither area is a secret, but both reward going slightly off the main strip rather than the first place you see.

East London carries a different kind of weight. Whitechapel and Brick Lane have the density of Bangladeshi curry houses you would expect, but the sharper food is often a few streets back, in the biryani houses and grill spots that locals actually queue for. Tooting, further south, does something similar with its cluster of South Asian kitchens along the high street, less polished, often better value.

Price and pace vary a lot by area and by what you are after. A quick lunch grill is a different budget and a different mood to a sit-down family meal with a proper spread. Weekday evenings tend to be calmer, weekends busier and later, especially anywhere near a mosque after Friday prayers or during Ramadan, when some kitchens shift their hours entirely. Worth checking ahead if timing matters to you.

If you are newer to this, the easiest way in is picking a cuisine you already like and finding its halal version rather than starting from the word halal itself. Turkish, Pakistani, Lebanese and Somali food in London are all built around it. Once you have a base you trust in one area, the rest of the map tends to open up from there.
