Church Street Market
Church Street Market is Westminster's largest street market, running along Church Street in Marylebone between Edgware Road and Lisson Grove. There has been trading here for almost two centuries, since the covered Portman Market opened nearby in 1830, and when that closed in 1907 the stallholders simply moved out onto the street. Today it is a lively, culturally diverse market where some fruit and fish stalls have stayed in the same family across generations, sitting alongside the antiques quarter at the Lisson Grove end. Entry is free and you pay only for what you buy.
Opening times
Church Street Market trades Monday to Saturday, roughly 8am to 6pm, and is closed on Sundays. It is busiest and best stocked from mid-morning onwards, with the fresh produce stalls at their fullest earlier in the day. Saturdays draw the biggest crowds, so come on a weekday morning for a quieter browse.
What's on the stalls
The market mixes everyday essentials with finds you have to dig for. Expect fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, flowers and plants, plus household goods, bags, clothing and shoes, a delicatessen and international takeaway food. The Lisson Grove end borders one of London's best-known antiques quarters, so the character shifts from groceries to vintage and collectables as you walk west.
Around the market / getting there
The market sits in Marylebone in the City of Westminster, NW8, an unusually diverse pocket of central London. Edgware Road and Marylebone are the nearest Underground stations, both a short walk away, and plenty of buses run along Edgware Road. Pair a visit with the Alfies Antique Market and the wider Church Street antiques shops nearby for a full half-day.
