The Albert Cuypmarkt fills the Albert Cuypstraat in De Pijp six days a week. The market's own site counts 260 stalls and has it running since 1905. It sells what a street market in a big city should: fresh fish and vegetables, cheese, clothes, fabric by the metre, flowers, suitcases and shoes. Most Amsterdammers know it for the herring and the stroopwafels made on the spot. It is a long, straight street, so you can walk it end to end and come back along the other side of the stalls.

When to go

The market publishes its hours as Monday to Saturday, 9.30am to 5pm. It closes on Sundays and on public holidays. The city's own market data and the I amsterdam listing give slightly different times, so the market's own site is the one we follow here.

What's on the stalls

The I amsterdam listing mentions fresh produce, clothing, flowers and fabrics, along with stalls selling everything from suitcases and shoes to vegetables and fish. Raw herring and fresh stroopwafels are the snacks people come for. Prices are set per stall, and you pay for what you buy. The market's site does not mention any charge for walking through.

In the neighbourhood

De Pijp is a dense neighbourhood of nineteenth-century streets, and the market sits in the middle of it. The market's own site calls itself the largest daily market in Europe. I amsterdam calls it the largest and most popular outdoor market in the Netherlands. We have not counted, but at 260 stalls it is a big street either way.
