Dappermarkt

Monday to SaturdayAbout 200 stallsOost

The Dappermarkt runs along the Dapperstraat in Oost, from the Mauritskade to the Wijttenbachstraat. I amsterdam counts around 200 stalls. The market's own history describes how a neighbourhood market grew into a market for the whole district. Today it has fresh meat and fish, vegetables, plants, clothes and household appliances, and traders from the Middle East, North Africa and Suriname selling food you will not find at a supermarket. The Oosterpark is close by if you want to eat what you just bought.

When to go

The market trades Monday to Saturday. We leave the hours out because the sources disagree: the city's market data says 9am to 6pm, and I amsterdam gives both 9am and 10am as the start and 5pm as the end. All of them overlap between 10am and 5pm. Monday has been a full market day since the early 1980s, when traders who could not get a pitch on other days began filling the street.

What's on the stalls

I amsterdam lists appliances, clothing, plants and fresh produce including meat and fish, and describes food from near and far, household goods, clothes and shoes. I amsterdam adds that the selection changes almost daily.
