De Sering: Community centre in Sloterdijk, Amsterdam
De Sering is a vegan community kitchen and cafe on the Rhôneweg behind Amsterdam Sloterdijk station, in an old factory hall on the grounds of theatre workplace De Sloot. People go for a cheap plant-based meal, and for the talks, workshops and parties that fill the room in the evening. Food is the way in. The people's kitchen serves lunch and a dinner where you pay what you can, so that a meal stays within reach of everyone. Beyond that, De Sering describes itself as a blank canvas: it offers its space free of charge to neighbourhood groups, activists and anyone who wants to organise something worthwhile. Dinner goes well with a show next door. It started in 2019 as a neighbourhood kitchen in the east of Amsterdam, with the idea that the political left needs strong communities. After the pandemic break it restarted from community centre NieuwLand, and then accepted a space at De Sloot, where the team built and renovated the kitchen themselves after a crowdfunding campaign. In November 2025 it opened a first branch, De Sering Centraal, for lunch and coffee. TestTafel, its experimental vegan dinner project, has since become a project of its own. The cafe is open Monday to Friday from 09:30 to 23:00 and on Saturday from 17:00 to 23:00, depending on the event programme. Lunch runs Monday to Friday from 12:00 to 14:00, dinner Monday to Saturday from 18:00 to 21:00. It is closed on Sunday, and you reach it from Sloterdijk station.
