Watersport Vereniging "De Schinkel": Sports venue in Zuidas, Amsterdam
Watersport Vereniging De Schinkel is a members' watersports club on the Jachthavenweg in the south of Amsterdam, close to the Nieuwe Meer. It has a harbour and a clubhouse, and the people who come here do so to get out on the water with motorboats, sailing boats, gigs, kayaks and paddleboards. This is a working association rather than a commercial marina, and the club says plainly that it is not a place for people who only want a berth. It has around 340 members, volunteers run it, and each member puts in 18 hours of work a year. Visiting boats are welcome at the guest jetty, where showers and wifi are included and the harbour master comes by in the morning and evening. The clubhouse canteen is the social centre, and on the Thursday club evening visitors are welcome to join in. The club was founded on 1 October 1919 and took its name from the Schinkel, the waterway that runs into the Nieuwe Meer. Royal approval followed in 1921, and the harbour opened on 8 May 1932. Club life goes beyond boating, with pub quizzes, billiards and a Sinterklaas party in the clubhouse. Sailing lessons run through De Roerkoning, and the gig rowers take part in the City Row Race. The opening hours listed here are for the clubhouse. The bar and kitchen have shorter hours, on Thursdays and at weekends. Visitors pay at the bar by card, as cash is not taken there for safety reasons. Mooring includes showers, power and wi-fi. Dogs must stay on a lead in the harbour.
