About Eye Filmmuseum

Eye Filmmuseum is the Dutch national museum of film, in the angular white building on the north bank of the IJ, facing Amsterdam Centraal. You come for exhibitions on film and moving image, for four cinemas running new releases, classics and retrospectives, and for the bar-restaurant with its view across the water.

The cinemas range from a large 300-seat room to one of about 67 seats, with a programme that takes in arthouse premieres, restored silents and children's films. The building hosts a temporary exhibition and a permanent one, and the exhibition floors are open from Tuesday to Sunday, or daily in school holidays. On Mondays outside school holidays the box office and restaurant open in the evening only. Only debit and credit cards are accepted. Most of the film collection is kept at the Collection Centre on the Asterweg, a short walk away, where the Eye Study lets you view it.

The museum goes back to the Historical Film Archive of 1946, later the Nederlands Filmmuseum, which sat in the Vondelpark Pavilion from 1975. It merged with other film institutions and moved across the IJ, and Queen Beatrix opened the new building in April 2012. Viennese architects Delugan Meissl designed it. Getting there is easy: the free ferry from behind Centraal to Buiksloterweg takes less than five minutes, followed by a three-minute walk.
