Tolhuistuin is a cultural complex on the IJ in Amsterdam Noord, right behind the free ferry from Centraal: 18,000 square metres of concert halls, garden, restaurant and studios. You go for a concert in the halls of the Paviljoen, a festival, an outdoor exhibition, or dinner with a view of the water. The programme is broad, from small theatre shows to large festivals, talks and club nights. Stichting Tolhuistuin runs it together with Paradiso, which books concerts in the main hall, and THT Horeca, which runs the shared-dining restaurant with more than 200 seats and two big terraces. The menu is vegetarian by default, and payment is by card only. The public garden is open from sunrise to sunset all year, and on weekdays it doubles as an outdoor office, with wifi and charging points. Around 30 cultural and social organisations have their workspace in the buildings on the site. The garden is one of the oldest city parks in Amsterdam. Travellers waited here for the boat to the city, a tea pavilion went up in 1770, and open-air concerts began in 1870. From the late 1930s the land belonged to Shell, sealed off from the public as part of its research site. The Paviljoen, by architect Arthur Staal, was built as the company canteen between 1971 and 1974. After Shell left, the site was renovated and opened in full to the public in 2014. The opening hours shown here are for Café-restaurant THT, which is open every day from 11:00 to midnight. Lunch runs from 12:00 to 16:00 and dinner from 17:30 to 21:00 on Sunday and Monday and to 22:00 from Tuesday to Saturday. The sharing menu is vegetarian by default, groups of 10 or more book by email at reserveren@tht.nl, and payment is electronic only. The garden is open to the public all year from sunrise to sunset, and the largest room holds 550 people standing.
